my first water block design

this is my first attempt at designing a waterblock, it's by no means perfect, or even great. im just getting an idea of what you guys think. As for my Design, i Took the idea of the little "nubs" on the bottom layer right from a factory heat sink. I was thinking that the block would radiate the heat from the processer to the nubs and the water cools the nubs off, therefore making the processer cooler. Please tell me if im on the right track or do i need to start over!

I think it keeps the water where it's suposed to be.

I don't know what tools you have available, but if you have the abilaty, why not mae the bottom two into one piece. one less joint to seal

This design needs more work.

The cups in the baseplate won't see any flow in them, because the flow is across and above the cups, because of the middle plate.

This will result in high temps.

The middle plate is needed, because the flow couldn't go from one cup to another. If the cups were joined (a little Dremel work), then the middle plate could be eliminated, but the block would still be very flow restrictive.

If the pins are going to be milled then yes, just aswell make the bottom and the middle the same peice. If the pins are going to be inserted then I would assume milling isn't an option so you would have to have the middle peice. Either way the pins are not even remotely optimaly positioned. Most of them will do nothing but restrict flow needlessly.

I thought they were pins not cups.

one: tools i have available. my mother owns a machine shop in michigan. American Machining Specialitys inc. They have a virety of v. mills, cnc machining tools, and such.
Two: they are not cups they are infact pins. and i thank you for your input. i am and will be continuing updateing my design. as of right now, i changed my design from 1 inlet and 1 outlet to 1 inlet and two outlets. thanks

Wow, that makes a lot more sense!

It should perform similarly to Hoot's (OC) pin fin block, if the flow is implemented correctly.

The problem though, would be in the construction, because unless you plan to weld the pins into place (which would degrade performance), then you'd have to mill them out of a single piece of copper, and that borders on the unreasonable.

Of course you can follow Hoot, and adapt a HSF for the purpose.

i was planning on milling them and writing up a program on a cnc machine. your right when welding the pins in place wouldnt make sense. thanks for the input
