pump noise
hey again evry one!
after i assembled the system and fill & bleeding the pump working kinda noisy is it normal and if not what could be the problem? (its an L30 pump) |
How do you have the pump mounted?
Is the noise "irregular" or a somewhat constant noise? It could very well be normal - My pump was quite noisy even with a bunch of thick rubber washers thinggies - So I was like grrr! Then I was like WOAH! look at this huge chuck of foam that just popped out of thin air - so my pump is no longer screwed to the case, it's "positioned" by some zap-strap dealies and resting on a 1" thick chunk of foam - much less noise :D |
hmmmm its mounted to the bottom of the case with sucktion cups the noisy is consistent and it seems like its coming from the pump itself and less from vebraition

Does anyone know if the "glue the impeller" trick works here?

Another thing I found on my L30 was that when I would turn it on, half the time it was quiet and the other half it was about 3 times noisier. I think this was due to the fact that the impeller spins both directions and one direction wasn't as balanced as the other or something like that. Try turning it off and on several times. It doesn't necessarily change direction each time so it may take a few tries. |
From the notes of an aquarist:
There are an additional two things to check for besides (read before) the crazy glue mode. 1) The impeller's (stainless steel) shaft has two rubber seats or cushions, one at each end. If you disassembled the pump and misplaced one or both, and/or did note properly seat the shaft, it will surely rattle when the pump is turned on. 2) If there is the smallest amount of dirt in the shaft, the impeller will tend to rattle. To test for this remove the impeller assembly, give it a good rinse in water, and make it spin while grabbing it between thumb and forefinger of one hand; it should spin freely like if it was on roller bearings. IF does not spins freely, then you need to take it apart and clean everything under water using an old tooth brush. |
Water Wetter/Antifreeze can help smooth out mag drive pumps since it acts as a lubricant if you add a little to your coolant.

I had a L30 that had an annoying rattle. superglue trick didn't work on it as it does on my current aqua via 1300. I think it might be a case of getting a bad one. On inspection, my impellor had a slight wobble when I spun it on its shaft. I had sent my back for a replacement. If its not the impellor rattling and its just the general pump humming, toss the suctions cups and set the pump on a thick spong/foam pad and will eliminate the resonating thru the case.
Also, the L30's make quite a racket until you bleed all the air out. |
