What taps do I need?
 

I'm tired of just grinding/filing the threads off and soldering barbs in(also that doesnt work on all materials). I'd like to buy taps for the barbs I use, but have no idea what threading to get. I use Watts Anderson-Barrows threaded barbs from Lowes hardware store. The size I typically use is pictured below, so what taps do I need to buy?

3/8 is the ID of the barb and 1/4 is the thread type. Those use a 1/4"NPT thread so get a 1/4" NPT tap and a 7/16" drill bit for the hole.

Yeah, you only need the 1/4" NPT tap though. The other two and the 3 dies are not needed. But decent price on the set if you ever find a use for the other parts. Or you can go to Home Depot and pick up a 1/4" NPT tap and a 7/16" drill bit.

Also remember do not try and make one hole with the 7/16", make sure you make at least one pilot hole first. On hard plastics I like to use 3 smaller bits before jumping to the 7/16". Especially on acrylic. Acrylic will kick your ass if you try and do one big hole. You will crack the hell out of whatever your workign on. have to be very gentle with plexy and acrylic.

was not aware Home Depot sold these taps, I've never seen them there b4 in the tap section. Also, I'm planning on ordering some acrylic drill bits soon also.

I got mine at Home Depot. But that was a few years ago. They seem to stop stocking items I normally buy....Same with Lows.... :mad: But if your not in a hurry then go ahead and order them. The cheapest route.

Yep, my Lowes didn't stock it either.

From someone that uses taps on a daily basis, I can tell you that I would not touch most taps that can be found at a hardware store. Most of them are junk. Particually with pipe taps, a poor quality one will be tough to turn ( will not cut well ) & be more likely to tear the thread.

Anyone know where to find a 1/4NPT and 1/2barb bit in Canada?
