Firebird: kickass browser

You can download the browser here:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/...-0.6-win32.zip

You can download plugins here:

http://www.texturizer.net/firebird/extensions.html

This browser is one of the fastest I've ever used (only Opera with all options and rendering on was faster). The plugins give it support for mouse gestures, radial context menus, advanced tabbed browsing, skinning, customized toolbars (including a non-spyware google bar!!!) and a slashdot news ticker (yesssss!). I have never been impressed by a browser like I have with this one. The best part is that it renders pages perfectly and beautifully. It allows you to just download the plugin support that you want and lets you ignore the rest of them.

While Mozilla is really an overweight piece of poo most of the time, this browser is the neatest thing since sliced bread. I would highly recommend that all of you guys -- linux and windows users alike -- give it a look.

I've been trying Mozilla, minimal setup, but didn't notice any improvements. I did notice Firebird in there somewhere: I'll have to give it a go.

Maybe I need more RAM... :D

Mozilla is definitely a resource hog ... this is not. You should try it.

I'm trying to convert my wife to this off of IE6. She doesn't understand the use of tabs yet (though she uses multiple windows) or gestures (she's afraid of them), and for some reason thinks that M$ makes a quality product ... go figure.

Downloaded. I'll report results.

Thanks!

wow, this looks like a pretty nice browser, and not a big jump from what i've been using (ns7). seems faster, a little lighter, nice stuff.

this file isn't really an installer though, which is kinda annoying, but it's all good.

bigben2k 07-29-2003 01:05 PM

No go for me: it just crashes. It's probably because of my old '95 install, that's in desperate need of a re-install.

Mozilla worked fine though.

WHat, its like a stripped version of Gecko?

I'll stick with NS 7.1

iroc409 07-29-2003 03:23 PM

it _looks_ stripped down, but it feels a lot like ns6/7. it's actually really nice, and pretty fast. has most of the features of ns7 without all the sidebars and that junk. i'm really digging this so far...

btw, there's a new version on mozilla.org, 0.6.1

iroc409 07-29-2003 03:24 PM

oh! oh! oh!

the _coolest_ thing... this browser supports TRANSPARENCY! something before only IE supports (to my knowledge)! it looks awesome, i can finally see a couple of my pages how they were meant :)

that totally r0x0rz

MyIE2 is nice for you ie lovers.

airspirit 07-29-2003 03:33 PM

Ooh ... must upgrade. Thanks for the tip!

The sidebar is what you make of it. Mine, when used, is a slashdot ticker. This is basically as you said: a stripped down version of gecko with ALL of the important stuff there. It has a very extensible method of using plugins, however, allowing you to make it whatever you want ... and it beats the pants off of NS speedwise.

mfpmax 07-30-2003 12:42 AM

I hate sidebar anything...

I turn it off on AOL IM(when I had it), and I turn it off on Netscape.

iroc409 07-30-2003 10:36 AM

yeah, but ns6/7 sometimes pops up the sidebar thing wether you want to or not, haven't figured out how to shut that off. it seems to like to do it when i'm using google... bleh.

mfpmax 07-30-2003 03:52 PM

The only time i've had 7 pop up the sidebar was when my system crashed and it ate my bookmarks and screwed up my settings...

airspirit 07-30-2003 04:44 PM

What I'm digging is how it works the same on both my winblows box and drake box. I've yet to find any oddities.
