Whats wrong with my set up?

Got my new rad today. Hooked everything up, took a little while to fill/bleed it, then i turned it on. I was very shocked to see 112f with a ambient of 75.

Thats the rad im using, its from a F150. It isnt that heavy but it does hold quite a bit of water. Its with a 305GPH pump and 1/2 hosing.

Any ideas whats up wtih my temps?

EDIT: Your guna have to get the url and past it in your browser yourself.

Providing you computer is anything close to modern that sounds about right (more info would be good though). What made you get a full size truck rad?

NiKnight 08-01-2003 09:44 PM

About right? Why so? Why would i have been getting better temps with a rad about 8x smaller?

Its a 2.4c, one of my folding rigs.

I got it because it was 20 bucks and im thinking that it should be able to get me to ambient temp. A buddy of mine has a much smaller air conditioner rad and hes getting there withought any fans.

Dude your dealing with maybe 80watts of heat not 800watts. You could put a rad the size of texas on there and it wouldn't do any better than a heatercore capable of dissipating 85watts.

:/ well this is a dissapointment

You cannot get to ambient temps unless you turn the computer off or use active cooling!

NiKnight 08-01-2003 09:53 PM

Sorry i didnt mean ambient exactly. Hes getting about 5 above. Not that bad if you ask me. He was using 2 heatercores and he was getting bad temps still, so he moved to that.

I put the flame thrower down this time and decided to PM bigben to come and explain reality for me. He will be in sooner or later.

Good luck!

PM? What PM? ;)

As Bill stated, airflow is critical, and I consider it to be the most important factor. Anyone who's read through Bill's radiator roundup (at www.overclockers.com ) knows this.

So 5C isn't impressive, unless it's a no fan setup. Sorry, no flame intended.

Copyman gets an immeasurable difference, that may be around 1 C, and his rad is smaller.

This is exactly why I've opted for a blower: massive airflow and pressure, combined with low noise. Automotive blowers seem to work well at 5 volts (hint, hint).

Ben, he is talking about CPU temp not water temp when he says 5C from what I can tell. Hence the reality part...

bigben2k 08-02-2003 09:11 AM

5C between CPU and ambient?!? That might be possible at idle, but otherwise the TIM joint itself accounts for 8 deg C, on a 70W load.

Then there's the age old "your CPU temp is not real" because the mobo reader can't read anything more accurate than +/- 10 deg C. I just don't understand why people don't get that.

I like to see people measure their water temps. It gives us an idea of the cooling efficiency of the rad, and a preliminary idea about the CPU temp, if all other components are known.

Here's a review/comparison of additives, to which I had to comment, because of a similar issue:
http://www.wc101.com/reviews/Additives/

The comments:
http://www.wc101.com/forums//index.p...=ST&f=14&t=346

In short, he trusted his CPU temp readings, but didn't realize the error margin, so the review is skewed, a little bit.
