sager laptops?
i was just looking at their 8887 professional model, and this think is ****ing sweet. cheap, too. it has more than i need, and i hear they're the ones that build the alienware laptops.
just curious if anyone has any experience with these, are they a good buy? are they reliable? they say they have a 72-hour repair guarantee. the specs on this thing for the price is amazing. might be interesting in going with these guys instead of dell if anyone has any good experience with them... edit: hrm, the alienware has better resolution than sager advertises, 1600x1200 vs. sager's 1280.... and the alienware is more expensive, of course... |
got a link?

http://pctorque.com/ has a sager forum that has lots of info
|
I like the custom configuration options, but man this thing is a hoss of a notebook. Its going to be like lugging around a backpack/case full of bricks to carry around, I think. Battery life will also be pretty bad, since it appears to be using desktop P4 processors.. which is why the offer more than one battery as an option, I guess. If you're going for more of a desktop replacement and dont actually plan on moving it much, it might be a good thing.
As far as warranty stuff goes, I've never actually seen one of these or worked on one, so I cant really comment on build quality. |
hrm, ok. you can see them at www.sager.com or www.alienware.com.
i'll check out the forums. it's not a _huge_ deal if it's a big unit. i mean, yes, i'm using it for travel, but it's going to be a desktop replacement while i'm on the road. if i need something small for connectivity i'll buy a cheap toshiba, sony or an ibook or something. i dunno... i should probably just stick with an ibm or dell, but always in search of something faster, better and cheaper... |
wow thats pretty awesome
considering they are the same... just made by the manufacturer... hehe |
Is there any proof that they make the Alienware laptops? I've been in the powernotebooks forum but not the second link.

If you do decide to go for one of these models, definitely go with a sager. And definitely buy from powernotebooks.com. They have THE BEST customerr servicce and the warenty is pretty good too. They also give you lots of custimization options. Including choice of OS, or no OS at all. The ONLY reason I would go for a dell over a sager is that dell offers a a removable graphics "card" that can be changed or upgraded. But on the other hand, the sager lets you have up to 3 internal hard drives and an upgradeable CPU, and they use DDR RAM. Plus the graphics are pretty good (ATI mobolity9000). Plus the sagers are much more linux-friendly than the dells. If you care. I was gunna get the sager NP8887, but i got a desktop instead. |

i dunno.. i'm still tempted to get an ibm or dell. i can get what i want from dell for basically $2k, and spend $200 on a 1gb memory upgrade afterwards (ddr). same with the ibm's, and they both have UXGA screens, which are pretty much going to be a necessity. alienware lists its model as a 15" uxga, where the sager is a 16" xga, at only 1280x1024. and, although pretty nice, i probably truly don't *need* 128mb of vram, not really looking to play any games. just work, 64mb should be sufficient. i dunno.. i'll keep it on the list. although i think at this rate i'll never decide, it's taken me a while to try and convince myself to buy a dell or ibm... |
wait for the 8890. I've played with one in NZ, it is a very cool notebook.
mobility 9600 pro + dual channel ddr400 + 865PE chipset + ICH5R with raid support! It should be any week now |
I'm really starting to consider the Sager wide-screen 17"
|
I'd highly recomend the sager notebooks. I'm typing on mine right now, a 4060. The customer service and support has been great. Very friendly and helpful people there.

ibm doesn't make their own stuff anymore? when did that happen? damn, that blows. that's what made ibm awesome :(
|
I hadn't heard about that... At least all new IBM laptops I've seen have EXACTLY the features you know and love from IBM... Most notably the full size keyboard.
|
IBM out sources only some of their laptop models, I'm not sure which ones. But they haven't made any of their desktop PC's for some time now. My friend's dad works at IBM. He told me this.

interesting.
i keep buying junk, like i just bought a new cellphone today, i shouldn't have (but, i needed it). i'm a little short of a new dell... they were running a bunch of killer specials on the site yesterday, which basically made about a $2800 dell $2100. dammit. actually, since it looks like i'm getting an office and stuff, i'm going to call my dad monday and beg him to buy me a dell. i know he won't, and he'll get pissed probably because i'm asking. long story so i won't go into details.. but it should be fun :) and no, it's not because i've been a freeloader all my life off my parents. quite the opposite. |
