G751 - Thermal paste, better than Arctic Silver 3?

Somebody on another forum said that they use G751 Thermal paste, and it gives better temps then AS3.

yeah i've heard a lot a/b Shin Etsu. but u also give me that "somebody" on another forums told u it was better. i've read a couple of user reports on the amdforums that Shin Etsu improves their temps by 6C over AS3. but then again i've read that an equal amount of people say there wasnt much if any improvement over AS3. usually when Shin Etsu gets a bad report people will say "did u apply it correctly?" or "have u let it cured?" but i have to also wonder the same for people who say Shin Etsu worked. Did they apply AS3 correctly? problem is applying the same amount of paste for different kinds is hard. and then it has to be the same mounting pressure. then how well did they clean it off. a lot of questions. its gotten good reviews but from what i've read i think its inconclusive. but who knows. it is the paste that AMD and Intel recommend so maybe it does work.

I couldn't pick any performance difference myself after a fair few tests - at least not anything to write home about.

It's good to hear that somebody with experience has tried it and hasn't seen anything special with it. I found 1 site that had normal temps at 38* C without the paste, and 28* C with the paste. I bet they were using the thermal pad for those tests!

I get pretty good results with it. But it is so darn thick it really is tricky to apply correctly, especially for the inexperienced.

I agree with Cathar in that it is nothing to write home about. With my modest equipment I do see improvement, on the order of 1-2C on average over ASIII. Aside from ASIII I have only used radio shack goop and it is markedly better than that stuff on my equipment.

1-2C improvement is largely irrelevant as it could just as easily be natural variation between mounts. I have mounted it dozens of times, but still those temps should not be viewed as some sort of claim and should not be construed as accurate.

Another issue is that there are some "blends" out there that obscure the issue somewhat. I have talked to several people who have purchased some that just "contains" G-751, who have had mixed but unavoidably subjective results. My sample came directly from MicroSi in Arizona which I have mostly passed on to people better able than me to evaluate, though probably not to publish the results thereof.

As mentioned, lack of standardization in application technique and also in measurement results in zero credibility for any review of paste I have ever seen.

In other words, if you want to know, you have no real choice but to try it. Shouldn't break the bank. Just make sure you buy pure G-751.

Generally, with a few exceptions, the feeling I get out of the on-line communities is positive with people having varying degrees of improvement. The big negative is its consistency, as I mentioned. Because of this problem, it is very easy to apply it poorly.

hope this helps
