Danger Den GPU Block 9700--->9800?
Will the DD gpu block for the 9700pro fit on a 9800 pro?
|
I can't see why not, I have both cards here and that area looks 100% the same to me.

Thanks for checking BladeRunner ...

Do you think the GeForce4 GPU block will work with the 9800pro video cards? Do they have that little shim around the GPU core? Is the block smaller than that shim? I just bought a Saphire 9800 pro ultimate(waiting for mail from newegg), and want to watercool it.
Thanks, BrianW |
I can't really comment on commercial GPU blocks as I haven't seen any in the flesh, choosing to make my own. The main problem with The Radeon 9xxx is the shim. To ensure full and good core contact it will either need to be removed, a simple operation, but cards have been trashed doing this, or to have some shim relief designed into the waterblock. I prefer not to modify the card so design my blocks to avoid the shim. You'd have to investigate which commercial blocks have shim relief, as just the fact it says it fit's the Radeon 9xxx series is not a guarantee it has shim relief. Unless a GF4 block is also designed to fit Radeon 9xxx it wont have shim relief, (or the correct hole spacing), and even if it is designed to fit the Radeons, like I Said, this doesn't ensure it will avoid the shim.
The current 9800 pro reference sink has a raised core centre on the heatsink base, so ATI saw this as an issue and implemented the most simple fix solution, that laughably negates the point of the shim altogether :p The Radeon 9xxx series have two diagonal retention holes that are the same as Geforce 3, (I've only had 9700 & 9800 pro only so others in the range may differ), Geforce 4 has a much wider hole spacing. http://www.zerofanzone.co.uk/picture...shim_specs.gif |
BrianW: If you got the Maze4 GPU block then it should indeed fit, mine has holes for both geforce and radeon cards.

Well I was impatient once again, so I decided to go with the older Dangerden GPU block. The plexi top one. It seems to be a good GPU block in it's own right.

lol Well we'll know soon.
|
yeah pls post as to whether the old DD block has shim relief or not.
if not, out comes the belt sander I guess. |
Just wondering, is there any difference in mounting between the Radeon cards and the All-In-Wonder cards? I'm thinking of getting an AIW 9800 Pro. Currently have 9700 Pro with swiftech MCW50-T.
|
Definitely not the belt sander....the shim can be pried off with enough cold and a sharp knife. There shouldn't be any difference in the reg/aiw cards except the larger blocks might not fit due to the big converter block.
|
Well I just got the Saphire radeon 9800 pro card in, and it appears the GPU is higher than the shim anyways. I will have to get the big ass passive heatsink/heatpipe off, and then I will know for sure. I will update you all.

I was wondering the same thing about the AIW. I have a ATI AIW 9700 pro and I'm lookin at gpu blocks.

I spoke to someone at Danger Den this morning and they told me that the Maze 4 GPU block doesn't work with the AIW. Not sure why and neither was he. I emailed there tech support to see if they recommend any of there blocks for the AIW.
|
Well the 9700 block from Dangerden fit in the die, but the barbs would not clear the ram heatsinks, which are very low profile. Oh well, guess I will go for the Swiftech offering, or if I can get assurance the Geforce4 Block from DD wil lwork with the 9800 Pro from Saphire...
BrianW |
Mmmmm.....well the maze4 gpu block should be the same no matter radeon or geforce.....you just use different mounting holes. What might work is their old gpu block that has the angled fittings. You can always just get rotor to make you a gpu block with higher 90 degree barbs =/
