was there ever a dual Slot1 mobo?

i have 2 Celerons 300a and 2 Abit BH6 mobos from my old puters. since i have no better use for them, i wanted to build my first dual system and play around with SMP in unix (the way it's meant to be enjoyed!). anyway, i am getting the feeling that there is no slot1 SMP boards. please prove me wrong!

Pritorian 10-02-2003 05:25 PM

There WAS a lot of them, the only ones we get inn at work anymore are really expensive Intel motheboards.

I used too have a daul 550 server. That had a dual slot1 Tekram mobo. And i still do i think, some place around here ;)

There are mobos out there, but they wont come cheap if they are not second hand.

I own a Dual Slot 1 board...it sucked...because it was a cheap PCChips/Amptron piece of garbage. I didn't have the SMP compatiblity chip included so you had to BUY it separate.

thanx! im sorry, but im new to multi-processing. anyway, look at this . that's the Soyo SY-D6IBA for $30. now, the one in the review that TerraMax linked to got 97/100, but it was the SY-D6IBA2. is there a diff? i cant see any in the specs. what does everyone think, should i get that board?

EDIT: realized that the SY-D6IBA2 is Ultra 2 SCSI and SY-D6IBA is only Ultra Wide. i dont care about that, not planing to run world's fastest web server here.

maxim 10-02-2003 06:59 PM

whoohoo! ever better than that, here is the board on EBAY:D

now all i need is a PSU and HD and im all set for my fbsd monster:evilaugh:

are there any special considerations for a dual CPU PSU? i just wanna get something for $20 or less, dont care if it's used as long as it works. would think about 300W is enough?

if those celerons are slot 1 you'll have to do a little soldering to enable SMP

dont think so, all celerons before Celeron II were SMP compatible.

pHaestus 10-02-2003 08:05 PM

the slockets could enable SMP on the socket370 celerons but the slot 1 ones required some work. I am 100% certain of this and will try to dig up the link.

pH, thanx, i looked it up. are you talking about Tomohiro Kawada's mod?

pHaestus 10-02-2003 08:58 PM

yup that's the one

mfpmax 10-02-2003 10:55 PM

Yeah, Celeron Slot 1s require SMP modification while 370s on Slockets require a SMP COMPATIBLE Slocket. I had non compatible Slockets but found a guide on modifying them. All the major Slocket makers made their Slockets SMP compatible though via a jumper.

Starman97 10-04-2003 07:17 PM

Yep 300A's in Slot1 config require the mod. There is no Mobo mod that will do this for you. A pin on the CPU is not brought out to the Slot1 edge connector. You have to drill out the via from the bottom and connect a wire on the top side.

I have a Gigabyte GA6-BXD mobo that I've been running two modded Celeron 300A's in for years at 450MHz. Dont expect to have much overclocking control on a dual mobo, they're about stability and meant for servers, not overclockers. The Celeron is meant to run at 66MHz, but the BXD can be jumpered for 100MHz which gives you a 450MHz core speed.

wanted to get the Soyo SY-D6IBA2, but bastards kept outbidding me in the last 10sec! anyway, after getting pissed off at all of them, i won this board for $20. it's an Intel R440LX, has SCSI for my drive that i bought already. we'll see what happens when this puppy gets here. i am having trouble finding reviews, all i get is those fake sites with popups and shit.

Pritorian 10-15-2003 06:05 PM

If i remember right, i think the LX chipset was bound at a 66Mhz buss speed? Just nice too know if your gonna oc...

Not sure but i would check it out at intel :) Or anybody else remeber this??

maxim 10-15-2003 10:12 PM

if that's the case, i'll try to do some mods to it. i'll have to look up in Intel's specs, and they seem to be extensive, what the connectors do and stuff. should be a nice project.
