need suggestions/comments on system

Here's what I've got planned:

Maze2 waterblock
inline pump ?gph (got it on caseetc.com)
dangerden cube radiator
4x4 radiator if I need (perhaps so)
1Ghz Athlon @ 1200 + 156Watt pelt
530 watt enermax PS with 20A on the 12V.

any help/suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

I know I should have gotten a seperate PS, but I hadn't cruised in here before I ordered all the crap.

thnx in advance!

Welp, I think that 12V/20A is the max output for that enermax. You dont want to keep running your PS at max for ever in a day. So if I were you, I would get a cheap ole 12V/17A stand alone PS for just peltier and the fans. Thats what I am going to order next week. See if you can return that enermax and get a lower wattage one like 350 or 431 (I have a 431) that will be cheaper and they will run all your hardware and the other PS, which you can set up to run off a relay, will power your pelts

I've seen people say that the 156watt pelt runs a constant 12.5 amps at 12v.

that would leave ~8 amps left on the 12v, close to what a 230 or 250 watt PS produces.

what do most motherboards and periphs use the most, the 5v or 12v?

also, I don't think I have room for another PS in my case. I have a mid tower.

the pump is going to sit on the bottom along with the 4x4 radiator(& hole If needed).

the cube is going to hog the last 2 5.25 drive bays with a fat 120mm fan on the front sucking cool air.
need to remember to get a grill :D so the little kiddies don't loose thier fingers!

I dunno... I have an Enermax 450 and I feel nervous running my 156 on it w/ all of the other components. It isn't good to max out a psu like that, because things start getting less power than they're supposed to. If I were you, I'd get an old 300/250w psu just for the peltier.

ok. I "fit" the dangerden cube in the top 3 drive bays of my mid tower. My question is this.

should I pull or push air through it, or both?

and should it be blowing into the case or out?

My thought is push it(air) into the case.

I won't push air in at the top of your case. Heat rises, blow it out. The other problem is heat rises. With the fans at the top of your case blowing out, only air warmed at the bottom of your case is going to pass through the radiator. Not an ideal setup. I would bring outside air in from the side or the top to feed the radiator.

Get another PSU. You don't want to burn out a fairly expensive Enermax 550. Get a smaller enermax and then another cheap PSU. You can find small PSUs in electronics catalogs (www.jameco.com, www.mouser.com) that are not specificly made for computers, but are more general purpose. One of those might fit inside your mid tower.

As far as air cooling goes, mount the radiator somewhere near the bottom of your case, preferably sitting flat on the bottom, your case raised off the ground with castors, with an intake fan blowing air through the radiator into the case. Then have a "chimney" blowhole on the top of your case. This setup works best because it blows all the hot air straight up in the natural direction it takes. This also keeps hot air from blowing at your face from a front blowhole  :)

****...is that the Enermax 651? that's TWICE as expensive as the 451...I would return the 651 and get the 451(more than enough for 1.2G and periphs)...and like others have said, get a stand alone power supply for the peltier and fans...

geez...isn't that 651 like $160??

resago 03-29-2001 03:57 PM

yes, its the 651 and I have absolutely NO room for another PS.

I'm stuck using only 1 PS for the whole system. Thats why I got the biggest one I could find.

p[ara]d0x 03-29-2001 09:59 PM

You could always mount a second PSU outside the case. I have often seen them sitting on top of a case. On one machine I saw one sticking out the side!

not very portable, or pretty.

I'm going for a self contained look.

resago 04-10-2001 02:07 PM

Well, I got the system finished and running.

the 12v line runs just below 12V with the 156 watt peltier on it.
running @ 1Ghz
at idle, the cpu is a 6C with 25C ambient.

at load its about 34C.

Going to overclock tonight.
pictures soon.

p[ara]d0x 04-10-2001 02:31 PM

Congrats, I hope the system turns out well!

I think my pencil scratchings were'nt good enough, I can't change the multiplier.

I can't get much past 110 * 10. (Stock voltage though)

I thought it was a blue core, the core batch had a Q in it though - pretty sure.

also, it doesn't seem to like me increasing the voltage ???

I was hoping to do 120 * 10

oh, BTW I am using an abit kt7-raid board (unmodded)

any clues?

p[ara]d0x 04-13-2001 09:11 AM

I somewhere read that if you pencil in the L7 bridges it ups your voltage to 1.85 or the max you board can take. I tried it on my Duron 850 and it worked great.
