Help! High Temps w/ Watercooling?!
 

Ok, I have a big heater core, barton 2800, 2x120mm fans on the hc, dd maze4, and magdrive 3 pump. I have it at 200x11, 1.75 vcore. On air (tornado ear-busting fan) it runs about the same temp as water (about 47c), even though it's from the board sensor. Ambient temps are around 31c. Is this about what I can expect w/o a pelt? Also, I built a custom enclosure for the hc and pump.
Could adding another exhaust fan to it help? It's about as airtight around the fans and the hc as i could get it. Thanks

By the way, could it be the air from the tornado circulating down by the chip cooling the sensor and decreasing temps? I'm planning on adding a thermal probe to the chip soon.

Is it quieter than your previous setup? If so, then watercooling is doing its job. Air cooling can be just as good or better than watercooling up to a point, but the added noise factor of aircooling is the problem solved by most watercooling setups.

Also, you are cooling a video card too, so there are two heatsources being cooled instead of just one. This could also be adding to your increased temperature, but I guarentee it is far quieter than having a fan on the GPU and CPU spinning at 18023801042 rpms. In actuality, temperature has very little impact on system performace when using the same clock frequencies. It is only when there is a massive increase or decrease of temperature over the norm that you get problems or a great potential for overclock. What I am saying is that a few degreese doesnt really matter all that much, but if you are talking about -10C or 80C then you can start getting pleased or worried, respectively :D.

That is exactly what I'm figuring out. I live in Arizona where ambient stays high, so I shouldn't have expected that much of an increase without chilling the water. But I just put it on the lowest setting, and it's way quieter, and it's now running at 44c, maybe because the as5 is setting, but it's cooler than what I was getting with air. :D :D :D

Wouldn't Arizona be the perfect place to try some bong cooling?

What do you have and how is it set up? If you can put some pictures up or describe better, we may be able to assist more. What size tubing, which core, type of fans, etc.

Thanks, but I believe it was just the Arctic silver needing to cure for a lil bit. Temps are now around 40c, it's way cooler and quieter than air, and I'm way happier too :) . Plus, I had it running with the cpu and fans off, so maybe the water was still warm from the pump.

Also, I used an aquafina/waterwetter mixture, and I've been reading that aquafina has minerals, etc, so I was going to go to distilled. I was wondering if there would be any ill effects if I let it run @ 1 more week with aquafina, just because I don't have any time.

OK, You´re down to 9 degrees above ambient, right? Load temp? Sounds pretty good to me. Nice job!

Thanks :D. I can't believe the temps have been so low for the past couple of days. At load, it goes to about 45-46c, which is better than anything I could get with air. I'll also take some pics of my enclosure, It's like a ghetto Corsair Hydrocool, lol. Ghetto, as in, I wanted to set this up as quick as possible, that I skipped making the box out of plexi (i'm currently doing that tho), and I made it out of cardboard, plywood, and ducttape :) :). I have to get a baking pan to put under it or something, Cardboard probably wouldn't hold the litre of water in case of a leak, lol.

Aquafina is just tap water that's been filtered to remove the chlorine taste. In the short term it's not a big deal, but distilled is certainly better.

On the rare occasions I have the computer (and rad fans) off, the pump heat alone will push water temps up to about ~12 C over ambient, in contrast to the usual 2.5 to 3.0.

You cant really see it in the pics, but I went to a lot of work inside and out to make sure it was fairly airtight (as airtight as you can get with professional duct tape and cardboard, rofl), On low fan speed (have it hooked up to my rheobus), the suction thru the hc is good enough to hold an envelope to it by itself. On high it tries to suck things off my desk, lol

I forget who it was that told me to build it like this instead of like how I planned it, but thank you. All fittings and tubing are 1/2" I.D, Magdrive 3 Pump, Maze 4. I just set it up like this w/o pelt and gpu block yet so I could get a feel for things. I just got started watercooling, and I love my ghetto box so far :D.

I thought it was the pump heat making it warm initially, because later that day, after I had it sit for approx 3-4 hours with the CPU and fans on, temps dropped to 45. I also think the as settled, and the ambient drops real nice here during the night, so that probably helped too. 12c over ambient is nice and warm too, just from the pump. So that was probably it. Yeah, going distilled as soon as I have time, Aquafina sure tastes nice, but it's probably not the best choice in the long run, heh.

Hey, papier-mache, can't beat that! Who doesn't like mixing computing with arts and crafts? :shrug: I generally have fun building or making anything anyways, I probably would have made my box out of glue and construction paper if that's all I had, lol :D :D :D :) .

Thanks Mojo-Tim. I would like to try some bong cooling eventually too, I have enough spare stuff here to build another comp, but I don't have another block. I'd like to do it on this one, but I'm probably going to put a pelt on it. The Arizona heat would have me filling it up a lot during the summer though...

Aquafina is tap water that has gone through Revers Osmosis (RO) and is essentially free of all minerals. I still prefer distilled but would not hesitate to use RO water in my rig. The water wetter is a bad idea though, it will create a nasty white film everywhere. I would get that stuff out pronto and just use a bit (10% or so) of antifreeze to keep bacteria and growth at bay.

^Thanks for the ww tip. I've only had it setup for a week, and my fill tube has a light white film where the water evaporated. Hopefully it doesn't get worse, but I'm changing the water out soon anyways. So just a light mix of regular coolant/antifreeze will be ok? Any other things I should add to the h2o?

Hmmm, I know a guy that works at the local Pepsi bottling plant - he's the one that said that said 'twas just filtered. Then again, he's not too bright...I'll have to see if he can sneak me in so I can see fer meself.
