My steps into pump modding..
Some time ago I came across this nice modification, and was thinking that it didn't look that hard. :D
I need a small pump with high head, as I made a real good functional mosfet block for my IC7-Max3, who turned out to be a major flow killer. I got me 2 eden106 pumps, as they are small, with a 70cm head. http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-003a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-004a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-005a.jpg The pumps where silent, and performed good. But the design was crap! per default the flow was restriced, at the inlet and at the outlet. Also the pump, supposed to be submerged, was leaking half of it's flow! This could be design to get rid of the flow when it was restriced, but I saw it as potenial presure loss. http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-009a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-011a.jpg So I made this small modification http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-012a.jpg and the flow got a lot better! If it wasn't for the leaks, I would just go for a modded front http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-013a.jpg and hook them up. From the "guidelines" of the above thread, I first made this: http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-021a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-025a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-027a.jpg Lookded to be good, and it got late, so I went to sleep. (Never do that!) You all know the dangeous time when you lie in bed and start thinking.... I don't need to have a flat layer, for me I could just add one extra layer of plexi, and I could still use the original flow path. So I came op with the following: http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-028a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-029a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-032a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-033a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-034a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-036a.jpg I tried each pomp in it's new "impeller" housing, just to make sure there where no contacts. As I let most of the housing intact, I did not expect any problems, and there where none. Sure, it was leaking all over the place, but it was not glued yet. I let it dry, and glued the pumps with 2 components glue, so I had a one time try. http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-041a.jpg And this is how it turned out: http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-044a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-046a.jpg http://members.chello.nl/l.vanderhor...p-mod-047a.jpg So far, so good. I let it dry for a few hours, before I powerd the thing. My first power-up was a failure. One of the pumps did not run! I fiddled with some plastic, to give the impeller a turn, and I could. So I powerd up again. This time it did run, but with a lot of rateling noise! No leaks! that's a good thing. Good performence, a lot better as it was prior to the pump mod. So Besides from the ratteling noise, I could say it was a nice project to do for a weekend! For now, I'll just let the pumps running. I hope that the ratteling is a small pice of glue. Or the impeller, or the glue will wear-out, so the ratteling will be less (I hope) If the rateling continues, I gues the best thing for be to do is to buy a bit bigger pumps like the maxi jet 250 from aquariumsystems. |
Just to keep you all updated. The rattling did not wear out, so I cut of the other pump.
Now it's just one, with the modified head from plexi. It's silent, 5w and it runs the water fast enough through my custom made memory "blocks" for my secondary loop, beeing: GPU memory "blocks", back side of motherboard "block", HDD blocks, South bridge block, mosfet block, Radiator and 5 meters of 6.5 mm ID tubing! (sill working on my PSU, if I'll ever water cool it) And the water still flows in a open (kitchen sink) setup! All I can say is that I'm quite surprissed. I already got me a koolance EXOS to do this secondary cooling loop, but as this is working, I guess I might sell the EXOS again :) |
