Metal Bolts and Poly-Tops
I was reading the thread about the "The Demonic X.T.C. water block", and someone mentioned that metal bolts, when used on blocks that have poly tops, will crack the top, and that its better to use plastic bolts. I always thought it was better to use the metal bolts because the offered a stronger connection with the chip.
I would appreciate any comments, since I am planning on buying a block in the verry near future wich will most likely have a poly top. Thanks. |
My opinion is that as long as you use washers under the springs to spread the force out then it isn't an issue. I am not a big fan of the nylon posts/nuts on waterblocks personally.

I do not think whomever was saying whatever that they ment the mounting hardware. That is irrelevant as you would destroy the CPU long before you cracked the top with the amount of pressure it would take to crack the top.
Meatal is also fine for the screws that hold the top to the base as long as the holes are not counter sunk with a tappered bit and to close to the edge of the block. If those screwes get over tightened it puts a lot of stress on the sides of the hole and will crack. Also it is not wise to put the barb holes to close together not only for cracking issues but because you can't get thick walled tubing on all the barb and hole clamps. Those are the problems I see with "The Demonic X.T.C". Well other than the blatent ripp off of the design. |
thanks. Ye, i agree, I was planning on getting metal bolts in the first place. I appreciate the fast reply.
Im actually considdering getting a maze4, but i will hold off untill Ph's reviews come out. Perhapse I may make my own, if I find the time, since I have access to a macine shop now. |
I edited my post above a little. I mis-worded some things.

I use metal bolts/springs, but with nylon washers. I am just afraid of nylon bolts breaking, they dont seem very strong.

Yea, i figured it would be too easy to strip the threading on those.
