Need quiet NB cooling...

Heya! I have an Abit IC7-G, and am unhappy with the noise im getting from the NB cooler. Im gonna waterclock and overclock the cpu soon, anyone reccomend a quiet NB cooler that wont limit my overclock???

Two points here, you are unhappy "as-is" and you also want to overclock
which directly will result in more heat being dissipated "board wide".

Frankly, I favour the passive heatsinks with larger remote fans:
o Flower, SLK and such like - blow-thro heatsinks
---- impingement heatsinks require air to pass thro fins & hit a plate, exit 90-degrees
o Passive NB heatsink - relying on airflow from the main CPU fan

Then use something like an 80mm or 92mm fan to cool them quietly.

For cfm calculation...
o AMD64 = 89W, P4-Prescot-3.4 = 103W
o 25cfm will cool 125W, which is doable in 80mm at about 21dB(A)

Large remote fans with minimise turbulence noise and allow you to
use quality fans like Papst, NMB, Panaflo etc - so ensuring both a low
noise PC and one which can have very high cooling capability.

A 40cfm 92mm fan will still be quite quiet - at least compared to the
horrid things they still fit on northbridges and some CPUs these days.

Thanks.

Try looking for a 1U copper heatsink and then modify it to fit the motherboard holes.

If you went that route, there are passive 1U heatsinks made that are
actually cheaper than those with fans on top - and taller. The former
tend to be 10-15mm (re 1U 44.45mm limit) and the latter 24-25mm.

A Skt370 might be better tho, since they are more NB sized and as a
1U heatsink quite plentiful in terms of price v demand right now.

how about this Zalman:

Deathbob, try Speedfan at about 40% (2000 RPM). Doesn't hurt my IC7's stability at 260 FSB.
