MCP v2 Opened up
Hi All,
I was filling the tubes to let my MCP600's run for a while, and one of the seals went lose. Not a problem, but a great opertunety to make some pic's! I really do hope you have the smooth side of the ceramic plate facing the red Ryton washer

It did not "fall apart" During the filling I removed the head from the pump, to be able to place it all under water (filling without air bubbles). During this the botom plate twisted, and I got qurious. I'm not a Noob, so I gently took of the top, and removed pice by pice, laying it gently on the table. The same way it got out, it went back in again. I did not check if there was a smooth side of the ceramic plate. If there is a smooth and a raw side, it does not make sence to place the smooth side on to the ryton washer. Due to the D shape of the axis, the ceramic plate can not move. The ceramic plate is however in contact with the top part of the housing, and the ceramic plate is "spinning". If the smooth part would be in contact with the Ryton washer, the raw side is in contact with the top part of the housing. The top of the housing isn't spinning. I'm not a specialist in Pump desighn, but that would seem to me a bit odd. Anyway, I'll check. Best way to check it is besides feeling of the ceramic plate ,to see if the ryton washer is in any way not the same as it was before I put it back together :) |

I was wondering about the washer.
I turned the pump down it had been running for 1 hour after filling, the other one is now running 24 hrs more.. (and it is indeed getting more silent) I opened it up again, and all though hard to see, the smooth side was facing the correct side. The smooth side is a bit shiny it you hold it into the light, the other side feels smooth also, but it's not. I made some point of that the raw surface should not connect to the outer housing, but seeing that it is also real smooth (but not shiny) I guess having that part contacting the housing only helps it to wear-in. Right? |
the ceramic shaft is keyed, as is the thrust bearing plate
no relative rotation between these pieces and the housing it is as it is supposed to be no sweat |
Just to keep you all informed (and to save questions later on from other ppl in the forum)
In the beginning the pumps are geting fairy warm, I estimate 45 degrees or so. After one day of running, not only does it get a lot more silent, it's also notaceble cooler. (must be 5 degrees or so) I hope they cool down further :) |
Sounds good. Not tried mine yet. Hope it's quiet as the main reason for my system is to get rid of the 40-50dB that my system makes :P
