water loop, heatercores
 

hey all, so sick of fans buzzing, going water :D

my hardware
mb:abit nf7, cpu 2500
ram: kingston hyperx pc 3700

chepo RIO400 pump(will upgrade later on when have some cash flow)
eagle talon's oil cooler rad(will upgrade to heatercore when weather is nice)
80mm and a 92mm fans

im goinng to do a custom(dont care about the case, gona cut it up) install with a short closed loop, rad mounted outside the case(proly at the back) with a push/pull low rpm fans....

how should my loop go? pump, rad, block, pump........
or pump, block, rad, pump...??
also thinking of mounting the rad outside the window with no fans(outside temp -8to +8 C range now...) is this a good/bad idea?

and finaly im gona upgrade to a heatercore when the weather gets a bit better so i can go to a junk and search for one.....
heatercore questions:
can i use one ripped from an old car? or its better to buy a brand new one?
since im mouning it outside the case, bigger is better right? or i can connect two together?
and finally what car should i ripp it out of and where is it generally located in a car?
anything else i should know?

you're usually better off picking up a new heatercore. They are usually dirt cheap; like us$20 for a brand new, shiny, leak-free one instead of us$20 for a used, gunky, slimy, questionable one you had to pull out of some junked car yourself.

I'll let someone else talk about diminishing returns vs. size and flow order, but in short: bigger is usually better, but only to a certain point where it becomes less than worth your while. A lot of people like pump>heatercore because it takes any heat the pump may have put into the water out before circulating it to the blocks. It has also been generally concluded that flow order doesn't matter much, so do whatever gives you the shortest flow.

IMHO Single flow cores are better than dual pass cores (less restriction) if you can get one that fits. The FedCo # 2-342 is one of the most popular big cores (9.5" X 6.125 grid area, plus tanks) with others in the same general range.
I paid about $40 for mine, brand new from NAPA / Belkamp. It has real funky longneck fittings on it, so you will definitely need to mod those to fit your app.
