Mounting Fans to Radiator
 

Just a quick question for anyone with a BIP2....How do you guys have the fans mounted to it?

I plan to mount 4 120mm fans on this rad in a push/pull config. Only problem is that the mounting holes on the rad are too small for normal screws.

I've considered drilling out the holes to make them a little bigger so I can run a threaded rod through all the fan and rad mounting holes. Then use wing nuts on the outer surfaces to tighten everything up.

I've seen some rubber mounting Sticks that could be used also.

Either of these routes looks to work good, but I will need to drill out the mounting holes on the rad for both of them. Is there another mounting option that I'm not seeing here? :shrug:

Try tape. There are some real good ones.
The problem with screws is your vibration noise.

p.s. what's a BIP2? a BIX2?
Normal it comes with screws to attach the fans.

Tape had crossed my mind, but I'm looking for a little more permanent solution. I shouldn't get any vibrational noise. If I use the threaded rods, I'll put silicone noise reducers between the fans and the radiator. If I use the rubber sticks, they allow the fans to be spaced away from the radiator and float per se.

BIP2=Black Ice Pro II
BIX2=Black Ice Extreme II

My rad didn't come with mounting hardware. If it should have, someone let me know so I can return it and get another (hopefully with mounting hardware)

Idealy you shouldn't mount the fan directly to the BIP.
there is a dead space in the center of the fan that will move no air...
this will case the BIP to have areas on it's core that won't be doing any cooling.
you may want to consider offsetting your fan .5" to 1" away from the fan by using a shrowd.

totally agree. You could use some plexi e.g. to make it.
p.s. good tape will stay on there for about 8 years....... how permanent do you want it?

I made my shrowd out of alluminum... and originaly thought i would use rivits to keep it together...
then i found high temperature metal tape... looks just like the alluminum...
unless my temperature of my rig goes above 200 deg F... i have no worries....
and if it does go above 200 then the tape is the least of my worries....

Thanks for the help guys. Guess I'll plan on making a shroud, unless anyone knows of one I can buy for use on 120mm fans.
