Demonic XTC Waterblock review
Not quite a White-Water... but performance seems close... at least with the setup in the article...

Agreed, same order of magnitude cooling, but I was underwhelmed by all the problems they reported. It seemed like they start out OK, but then made some bad design decisions as they went along. The two biggest issues I felt were the mounting hardware design and material choice; and the use of aluminum barbs in a copper block (plastic or brass would have been more suitable IMHO) Because of the problems I would have given the block a far lower rating.
As to the test, it wasn't great, but I've seen worse. I wouldn't say it was up to a high enough standard to rank the blocks, but it was good enough that I feel comfortable saying they are comparable. The biggest easy add to the test technique would have been to supply some comparative water flow data (a 'bucket test' would probably have been enough) so as to judge whether the blocks were comparable in flow resistance. They are close enough in cooling that I wouldn't choose one over another on that basis, but if there is a significant spread in the flow resistance then it would be good to choose the one with the lowest resistance since it gets the most done with the least amount of work. At least the results are consistent with pHaestus results, XTC aside.

heh.
that block design is so clever and original! sorry, old news (no one wants to talk about it anymore), i know but the thing I wonder about is how the impingement slit is built into the barb. What if the slit doesn't line up perpendicular to the flow when the barb is adequately tightened? |
