Since everyone and their grandma is fishing out news clips about new liquids for water cooling, I thought I'd add one here:

Yeah, but not much chance of getting hit by an arrow or being stalked by Sharon Stone with an ice pick. Or is there...?

Actually, the effect can be reproduced at home: mix some corn starch and some water in a low aluminium plate, then put your hand flat into the mixture. If you raise your hand slowly, it'll pull out of the mixture, as you would normally expect. If you try to go quicker, and slam your hand back down, the whole liquid will solidify to where it'll take the aluminium plate with your hand movement...

Isn't kitchen physics fun? :D

Dont wanna have a leak in your pants and be shot by an arrow in the same day. I live by this rule. :D

It sounds similar to that fluid used in suspension systems that flows like normal oil until a magnetic field is passed through it, then it suddenly turns incredibly viscous (almost solid, kinda like taffy. mmmm, taffy....). Cool stuff, but costs about $500/gal.

Plus upon hitting the pump the stuff would harden. Not fun for the impellor :D

As far as i know:
A Kevlar vest, itself, is made for sharpnel and "enviormental" defence. Keeping stuff hiting you, such as rocks, branches, etc , and the ocasional piece of molten metal.
Not particulary suited for sharp and pointy objects, such as knifes and... arrows.
Its designed to spread the impact force, on a larger area.
However, there are about two types of kevlar armour. Soft and hard. The soft, mainly used, when hit by bullets, it doesnt stop them. The kevlar itself only slows down the round. It needs the ceramic or steel or even titanium plates to keep them from penetrating. Ense the several "grades" of vests. The harder ones are more efficient on stopping bullets. Even with no plates , but depends on the ammo size and power. Usually used with plates also. But heavier, bulkier.
A ceramic or titanium plated vest can stop even a 7.76mm slug. AK stuff.
A simple "soft" kevlar helmet (with no plates on the "pockets") wont stop even a 9mm bullet from medium range.

Back to arrows. They just get into (penetrate) the fabric, due to the matrix arrangement. Same as ice picks. And some guys named Anderson.

This is great now an arrow to the shoulder will "bounce off". Unfortunately the blunt trauma from the impact will cause severe internal bleading ultimately resulting in death. doh :<(
