Airtrap Height?

Is it necessary for an airtrap to be the highest point in your system to work?

technically, anything that can act as an air trap (res works as well) should be. however many people have rads, the thing that will trap the most air, as the highest point in their system (just due to space restraints, etc), and as long as you rotate the case a lot and really work with the rad to get the bubbles out, itll be ok. besides, most air bubbles (save huge ones) should dissolve back into the stream after about a week

errr, to answer your question, yes

Okay so bottom line is no my airtrap does not need to be at the highese point to work properly.

It technically doesn't, but a lot of people like to do it that way because the air doesn't have to be forced against gravity to get down to the trap. My setup (which I'm actually assembling right now on the floor) has a single-pass heater core mounted vertically in the back panel of a full tower with the upper fitting going straight across and into a bay reservoir. I figure this should be pretty efficient at catching air quickly.

We've covered this before.

If the airtrap is not at the highest point, and you have any kind of leak in the loop, the coolant will come out of the airtrap (assuming it's not sealed).

If the airtrap isn't at the highest point, air will accumulate at the top of the loop, when the pump is turned off, then be caught later when it's turned back on.

An airtrap also usually acts as a fill point, and it really works best when it's on top.

Consider adding a bleed point, at the bottom of the loop, to help making a system flush/refill much easier/quicker.
