Which NB Block?
Pretty self evident title; I have an ASUS K8V and I'm hoing to purchase a Maze4 GPU for my 9800XT and an RBX (or TDX if it's a good performer) for my A64.
The question is, which NB block would you recommend?

I didn't think that the A64s had northbridges.
Anyway I dont think you should use a block on your NB... just stick an overlarge heatsink on and a case fan over it (or a smaller fan on top of it). Most of the time it adds too much restriction in the system for little or no extra cooling benifit.

Oh...it's just theres an ASUS heatsink just below my processor and MBM5 gives me temperature readings for my motherboard, so I just assumed that was for the Northbridge.

The NB would be more accurately represented by the CPU temperature in an A64. If you are dead set on watercooling your chipset, go with the Maze 4 block. It has the lowest restriction.

Some A64 boards (Gigabyte for example) do have an actively cooled north/south bridge on them.

The NB is integrated into the die, you can see it in AMD's tech docs. "Chipset" is a more accurate name.

I agree that the Maze4 chipset cooler from dangerden would be the best. It has the lowest restriction I've ever seen in a chipset block, and looks pretty cool too.

Its just a HT bridge and an AGP controller. I wouldn't bother to watercool it, but I guess if you really wanted to you could.

it all boils down to how hot it gets...
can you measure how hot it is?
worst case .. the finger test..
if you can keep your finger on it for 10 secnds.. then you probobly don't need to water cool it.. |

A better measure of whether or not it needs to be cooled is if it causes instability. The NB itself isn't very heat sensitive, and I'm damned sure the SB (the chipset on an A64 board) won't need watercooling.

on a P4 system cooling the northbridge does make a considerable diffrence...
it gave me a higher overclock... by about 15Mhz higher FSB
but that is just my machine...
others may get diffrent results |
