How do I watercool 9800XT 256 Mb RAM?

Hey, I have a 9800XT 256 Mb RAM graphics card (by ASUS), it has dual fan's. SO I wonder if any of you have an Idea how I can fix myself a watercoolingblock, or whatever to cool this graphics card. Tell me!

If it isn't possible, does anyone know where to buy watercooling for that card then?
Any ideas ppl?

(1 more thing, is it easy to remove the fans on the card, or isn't that nescessary?)

Yeah I have been wondering the same thing. It seems like there is a ton of products for 9800 cards but none of them mention if they are for the 9800 xt or not. It also apears quite a bit more complicated to remove the various heat sink and other components then on most other models. I have been half tempted to try placing an old waterblock on top of my card as it has a large flat copper plate on the top. This is a built by ati card so it is fairly different from your asus card. I expect to see more products for this card as the price drops. Shouldn't be long now as the new ati cards are out and making me feel slower already  .

It is pretty simple to remove the complete Asus cooler.

I took some pics of mine, I'll upload them later on.

I also modified my 9800 pro full waterblock system to fit the Asus 9800xt

from memory you simply undo the screws unplug the fan and take the heatsink off. Thermal paste may cause a little bonding effect so you may have to pull it off.

BladeRunner 06-05-2004 05:13 AM

Ok I checked cause it was playing on my mind ;) ... took me a while to find the heatsink in the bottom of the box tho..... is it me or do Asus vga boxes keep getting bigger & bigger :p :D

anyway enough sillyness, there are four spring loaded screws on the front of the card:-

Just undo these and remove the complete sink it two parts with fans still attached. The four tiny screws just hold the anodised aluminium ram sinks to the copper base plate.

since u allready have that hsf nicly removed can u take some mesurments for the hight of the memory, core from the block base ? :)

I plan to write it up for my site soon, until then read this topic taking note of my posts in the thread...

I'll take some measurements from this card, but as said you should take it as a guide only, (read the linked topic above for why).

saying that this Asus sink is one of the best fitting, combined VPU / Ram units I've come across, (on my sample at least). Past attempts by Asus and other makers were mostly poor in contacting either ram or GPU.

That is not to say it is a particularly good sink design imo, alu sinks to copper base have no thermal paste, and the cooper plate is just bent down to touch the ram meaning no direct contact to the sink over the ram area... pretty poor.

i can see your point ..

well , a starting point will help aswell and after ill have time ill mod it to fit for mine :)

i have a sappaire 9800 pro 128mb , ill add his mesurements after ill have time to takem ...

Etacovda 06-05-2004 07:34 AM

lol, photohax that box :) either that, or its a mini monitor and keyboard :p

BladeRunner 06-05-2004 11:08 AM

The box image is unaltered, its just a "sales box" or "window display box" :dome:

Was just messing, but the real box isn't exactly small, being bigger than any motherboard box I've had

8-Ball 06-05-2004 01:23 PM

All hand made.
