Invariably it was about appearance. I'm not saying that one can't do better and that my blocks are lapped perfectly flat, far from it in fact, however upon questioning the complainants, they were aimed purely around the appearance aspect. They basically mistook lack of a mirror finish for a surface that was therefore "not flat".
600-grit lapping will give fine scratches measuring in the magnitude of around 1 micron deep. The finish is a very dull mirror with a "smoky" reflection. People would look at it and say "Can't see my face - the lapping is crappy", before even installing it.
