I'm in Canada as well, and it's not nearly as bad as what you're describing, at least in my situation. True, I get pretty weak interest on my checking account, but I don't pay any fees with the account I have unless I do more than 20 transactions a month (which I do sometimes), and then it's like $6 CAD.

I bank through my local credit union.
