GPIB may be the standard, but working with it every day really brings out my critical side. The cards and cables are expensive, the cables are thick and hard to work with, the transfer rate is slow, the ability to have multiple masters on the bus is missing, the topology is limited to a single bus, the error handling is crufty, and the programming is primitive.
But! GPIB is extremely reliable, is a very stable standard and works well with all the really good instrumentation. Once you know it, you don't have to learn anything more.
