Thanks that all makes sense now.

I still need to figure out what I can use for the res. I took the pump with me to Orchard Supply and looked around in the PVC section. The PVC 2" 90* elbow was too small to fit around the mouth of the pump. Next I tried a piece of black piping (forgot the actual name) and the 2" piece just barely fit, but then I realized that I could only get it on about 1mm because the pump outlet plastic was getting in the way.

I also looked around for some tupperware containers but nothing seemed like it would work.
