It was all an implanted fantasy. Prior to even implanting him there were scenes of the "Blue sky on Mars" on the monitor, with the technician saying something like: "Blue sky on Mars eh? This is gonna be one hell of a memory!". Everything that took place after that was a required part of the memory implant to make the memory flow in a contiguous and believable sequence.
