I'd look into PWM, but you might have to "play" with the frequency to get it to work right.

It's not dead silent. If you can undervolt it enough, you might be able to get it to run really, really quiet. The main difference is that the noise (in my situation) comes mostly fron the wheel chopping through the air, where with an axial fan, I'd be complaining about the noise coming from the motor itself. It's a different kind of noise. A blower here makes a noise at a lower frequency, making it far more tolerable.
