Better than using shims:
Protect your CPU

I've done this with my last 3 AMD chips, no cracked cores so far. No increased temps, either.

It also makes it easy to lap my CPU. I just lap the whole thing and the CPU gets perfectly flat. You don't think the lettering on AMD cores makes a difference, think again! Lapping decreased my temps 2C.
