I just built my brand new system:
A64 3000+
Shuttle AN51R
My temps were showing 73C for the CPU! I'm using the stock cooling while waiting for my watercooling stuff to come in. I've always had my temps below 50C, and above 50C I started to worry.
Here's what happened:
1. Read Anandtech posters tell me to shut my computer off, so I did.
2. Unclamped the HSF, only to find that it was stuck to the A64 with the thermal grease.
3. Pulled.
4. HSF came off, with the CPU STILL ATTACHED TO IT. Meaning it got yanked out while the ZIF socket was in the locked position.
5. Screamed.
6. Saw bent pins.
7. Screamed.
8. Carefully bent them back, telling myself that if the CPU is dead, I'll just say that it was DOA.
9. Took off old compound, put AS5 on CPU and HSF.
10. Remount.
11. Same old temperature.
12. BIOS upgrade.
13. BIOS shows 39C for CPU.
14. MBM and MBProbe, however, STILL shows 73C.
15. On load, temp only fluctuates by about 2C.
Should I RMA because of this?
