Nothing wrong with your camera, I also use my trusty 35mm, and develop on CD (use the previews in posts). Cheap, accurate, and thanks to an excellent Macro lens, always in focus.

There are many paints that you can use, but there's always a trick: the steel needs to be primed first, and of course that means sanding it down. Here's an excellent article:

Personally, I'll be trying out Rust-o-leum's "Hammer" paint, so polishing is out.
