The only diff between the stepped one and non-stepped one should be the thickness of the waterblock, diff thickness and the same spring results in the diff spring force, the stepped base has a little thicker, so when applying a SK-8 kit it should add the pressure to the block,then to the core. But with the protection of the IHS of K8, it should be safe. Or we can replace another softer spring applying same force. All of above is only guess, there must be someone have experience on it. Who would give me an answer?
