Pumps dont suck, they create an area of low pressure with the impeller that draws more water into it, thus the need to prime them. If they could suck then u wouldnt need to feed them water before you started it to get it to work.
Read the part about Centrifugal Pumps cause that is what a pond (made for comp) pump is.
