I gotta jump in here again.

If you are getting 50-60ms ping times on a lan you have some serious issues. Probably crappy switches - they are not all made equal. Yeah, its possible that you are flooding out the buffers and enough packets are getting dropped to push up the ping - possible but not really likely.

At a certain level, low pings will NOT help you. I can't remember how low it is - but sub 20ms is probably no extra help, unless your servers are so badass that they are processing and sending packets that often. Partly game dependent but 20ms is a good goal.


Back to 50-60. If you are getting delays of this magnitude on a LAN you are either running into massive buffer restrictions, a huge bottleneck somewhere, or bad hardware. A few dodgy network cables or switches can easily pump the ping up due to tcp retransmission requirements. And if you are doing datalink layer retrans then you can have even more problems.

I'd take a look at the hardware again and see whats going on there.
