Have you tried it on both IDE ports.
I had trouble at first and swapped the drive to the other IDE connector and it worked.
I then was able to add a second drive and now I can put them on either connector.
I don't know if that makes any sense but then again a lot about these things don't make sense.
Also depending on the drive I was using I had to change the jumpers to specify it as a single drive.
