If you want to learn a descent 3D CAD program that will work descently on your computer, look into Rhino3D. Its fairly easy, so it's a good starting place for someone new to 3D CAD. Of course, it doesnt come anywhere near to the functionality of Pro-E or inventor, but I ran it on a P133@150Mhz (yea, I'm a badass overclocker!! werd), and it ran fairly descently, as well as a PIII800, where it ran perfectly fine. As long as you don't intend to render with Flamingo, you should be able to run it fairly well.
