help w/ SATA and abit IC7-G

So, I have a problem...

I can't get my system to recognize both of my sata drives.

my specs:
abit IC7-G
intel 3.2c
2x512 ocz 500MHz
cards in the system
sapphire 9800pro 256
intel pro100 NIC
SB audigy1
current drives
80gb maxtor ide (this drive is removed when the sata drives are installed)
drdrw on ide 3

a side note here, my floppy drive controller doesn't work

I just bought 2x74gb raptors which are sata...
now the ic7-g has 4 sata connections: 2 on the NB and 2 on the SB controlled by a Silicon Images chip
both have raid options but the NB one has jbod options also

this is the actual pb - both controllers detect the first hd of the pair correctly BUT the 2nd one is detected as a wdc 80bb and a size of zero
when a striped set is created it has a combined size of 138gb which seems close to what it should be
after a reboot the 2nd drive is no longer part of the stripe set but can be added to the stripe with no problems, however it drops out of the stripe again after rebooting
also after trying several sata cables on the SB the 2nd drive wasn't detected at all
and when the system boots with the drives connected to the SB it tends to power off almost immediately... sometimes

SO...

why is it detecting the wrong kind of drive?
why does it create a stripe set & then forget what drives are in the stripe?
why the power off?

possible solutions i've thought of...

replace the MB - best buy sells this board so i can do a buy, swap, & return
cost: none, takes a while, will be a bitch to remove mb as it's WC
benefit: replace controllers
trade the cable of the working drive with the the none working one
cost: none
benefit: test drive and controller
return drives
cost: no proformance increase
benefit: save $300 and a lot of frakin hassle...

thanks
