Sorry to dig up this thread, but I'd just thought that I should point out that the statement above is untrue. The term pH was invented by a danish chemist at Carlsberg laboratories, Søren Peter Lauritz Sørensen, and stands for "potens-eksponent af hydrogenion", and is measured as the negative exponent of the concentration of H3O+ ions in a solution. A concentration of 10^-3M for example will yeild a pH of 3.
