Being thin is no big deal. In fact, I read an article that said 1"-1.5" is a better radiator thickness for what we are doing because of the low speed fans we use.
I don't know how much changing the barbs would help. That system is made for the small radiator and pumps it has. It is probably designed to give the maximum cooling it can with the size hose it uses.
Most likely, the only way to make it cool better is to upgrade everything (build a bigger and better cooling system if needed).
