JD: have you done any work with 45degree inlets and outlets? According to some of the data pH dug up they should offer substantially less flow restriction than the 90degree inlets/outlets every commercial block uses at present.

I think a center inlet with some type of jet is probably the best solution. In order for a center inlet with the jet to work is has to be strait down and not angled. I guess you could try and 45 the outlet somehow. You might gain some flow rate.
