We will assume that when you say 90% 1/2" tubing that you have 3/8"->1/2" conversions on the inlet and outlet of the pump. This might actually hurt your performance.

my tubing goes like so: 1/2" barb on a large, electrical junction box. connected to that is a 10" run of 3/8" tubing to the pump inlet.( i have the part to do the 1/2" inlet mod but a little weary about doing it, even with access to a mill) another 10" run of 3/8" tubing from pump outlet to the core's 1/2" barb. then it's nothing but 1/2" tubing from the core to the block, through the included Y-fitting for a single run back to the reservoir through one more 1/2" barb. BTW, all barbs are brass and are bored out a little and the inlets or outlets are bevelled depending on where each is in the loop.
