he also says "Since the flow through the system will be the pump capacity at the total head resulting from the sum of the individual flow resistances of all the components"
it is the sum of all the individual flow resistances, not just the lowest one. so if you enlarge the fittings on the block, that is two less individual flow resistances, hence more flow.
