I expect this will be nowhere near as good as I want, but I will be able to glue some alu heatsinks onto the top and bottom peices..this will make it much easyer to remove them etc.. and make it non-permenent - I hate the idea of thermal-adhesive'ing heatsinks directly to the mem chips.

Pretty sure I picture what you are talking about. I did the same thing with my 9800xt
You can kind of see the bolt that goes through the board that holds the two sinks against the bga chips.
Not being permanent is definitely a plus.
