I've had it happen to several Intel P4 processors on Dell GX260, 270, and 280 PCs. In every case the CPU came out with the heatsink without any bent pins. I assumed it was caused by the gray goop they use as a thermal compund, but perhaps it is a more widespread issue.
I think it's caused by the combination of the large heat spreaders combined with the apparently weak sockets taht must be used due to the tiny, fragile pins found on modern CPUs. Older CPUs that had big heat spreaders never came out, so it must be the pin size/socket design that's causing the problem.
