A filter will help with the dust, yes. I suspect the health concerns may be over-rated a bit. I have used in the past a cold-mist humidifier (not piezo) that had a filter over the air intake. The daily accumulation of white dust was visible on the fiter.
Having looked at your "softener" link above, you may already live in a region that naturally has soft water, making this whole issue less of a concern.
