Default Snap 4000 Upgrade

Got my hands on a Snap Server 4000 and have started upgrades on it.

I was able to get it to OS 3.4.805. The reason for this is I've got four 500GB Seagates I want to install in this and I hear this version supports the larger drives.

I've also upgraded the RAM from 64MB to 256MB, which is working OK.

Apparently one of the hard drives was going bad because I kept getting a SMART warning on it during the startups between upgrades. It seems to have given up the ghost because now it's listed as FAILED in the log.

One thing I've noticed with my unit. I keep getting a:

E CPU temperature is excessive; the CPU fan may have failed. Temperature 4/14/2006 3:35:59

message whenever I turn it on. I've checked the heat sink on the CPU and it's sitting tight on the CPU and when I have the cover off I can see the CPU fan running. So far I haven't left it on for more then an hour or so so I don't know if the message reoccurs. Anyone else seen this behaviour? The big fan at the back of the unit is also running.

I'd like to update the OS to 4.0.860 before installing the new drives but I get the message that this is not a valid update for this unit when I try. I remember seeing this with a Dell 705N when I was trying to update it to 3.4.805 and had to change the OEM number. Does anyone know if Adaptec changed the OEM number when you update to an earlier version of 4.0.x? Anyone who's got 4.0.860 running on their 4000 or 4100, if you could let me know what the OEM number is. I'm just wondering if this is the path they took to lock out the update and if I change the number if the update would then work. The file size for the update is about the same as that of 3.4.805 so I can't believe it's just a patch. I think it's the full OS, but that it's got a bit of code that keeps it from installing unless it thinks you've installed an earlier version of 4.0.x.
