Default e-mail notification question

I can't seem to get the e-mail notification to work for my Snap 2000. Here's what I've tried:

1. Pinged my SMTP server's name (outgoing.verizon.net) to determine its IP address

2. Entered that address into the Failure Notification page

3. Checked the box saying "Send a test e-mail after saving settings"

4. Clicked OK

This results in a message saying "Unable to send E-mail." I am guessing this is because my SMTP server requires authentication. Does this mean I can't use this feature, or is there a workaround?
