It would be cool to be able to use one of the network media appliances with the Snap serving the files. That way, you wouldn't need to have a PC running to play the music. However,streaming would require software running on the Snap. I suppose it would be technically possible for someone to write a Java .mp3 player that would serve the music somehow, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have looked for a network media appliance that can read music directly from a network share, without server software, but haven't had any luck. Anybody aware of such a thing?

What I do:
I mapped a share on my Snap 2000 as drive "M" on all my networked computers. I then imported that share (~10,000 tracks) into the iTunes library on each computer. That way, each machine doesn't need to store 45GB of music, and they can use playlists from the other machines (using the import/export playlist functions in iTunes). I use a freeware program called iTunes Library Updater to update the iTunes library on each machine after I add new music to the Snap. My wife and I each have seperate libraries, which sync to seperate iPods, but there is only one copy of the music (plus a couple of backups, of course). I keep the backups synced to the Snap's share using Microsofts Synctoy.

I can play music on my various home stereo either using my iPod, or using iTunes on one of the networked PCs, which is also connected to the stereo.
