I don't think he's talking about using a solenoid...just a simple timer and a relay to electrically complete the same circuit as pushing the power button would do.

I'm with you on the UPS thing....I have a matrix UPS 5000 in the basement...maybe a little overkill, but I got it for free It holds my equipment for hours.
