actually in the early 1000's and in all 2000's (not 2200) the OS is stored on Flash Ram and all you need to do is make sure you have OS 3.4.805 or greater and throw in large drives and you're good to go.
The later 1000's, 1100's, 2200's you have to image the HDD.
Basically if you can pull the hard drives out and the unit still boots and you can access the web interface then you've got a Flash Ram model. If not then you just follow the copy HD to HD instructions, no need for an image file.
